Artists Bio

Walt Sorensen always had a love for photography, and for over 15 years learned photography through experimentation. Walt had the privilege to Study under David Austin. From this inspiration grew a desire and passion for photography, with the result of receiving several awards and honors. One of Walt's first gallery showings was part of a photographic exhibit called  “How the West Was Won” at the Schorr Gallery in West Jordan, Utah.

Walt decided to pursue photography as a career, Completing the program at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC). Walt received an Applied Associates of Science Degree in Visual Art and Design Specialization in Photography. During this time; Walt had the honors of receiving 1st & 2nd place in the Pro-Amateur Photography Division at the Utah State Fair the first year he submitted. Walt displayed his photography as part of the “A Collective Vision” Gallery showing at the Rio Grande Café a SLCC student collaboration. (1) Shortly thereafter, Walt had a display in the Springville Museum of Art “Spring Solon”.

During his time at SLCC; Walt volunteered with The Globe Weekly News being the lead photographer and unofficial photo editor. Walt received many awards including a Merit award for color photography, and received the Superior student award from the SLCC photography department for having an outstanding photographic point of view.  Walt was also the President of the SLCC Photography Club, had his first Solo-Gallery showing at the Hunter Library, part of the Salt Lake County Library system.

Walt had the honor of receiving 1st and 3rd place and an “Honorable Mention” in the Professional Photography division at the Utah State Fair, his first professional awards.; (2)  and most recently 3rd place for macro photography

Staying active in the community Walt has Co-Judged the PTSA Reflections Photography Contests, and was selected by West Valley City to be part of a Artist exchange with Nantou, Taiwan. During this exchange Walt gave his first international photographic lecture. 

In 2007 Walt was included in the "Legend of Hidden Hollow" A Brolly arts production, were Walt developed a 27 piece outdoor photography installation called "Landscapes Including the Hand of Man"

Walt Studied about Commercial advertising portraiture from local advertising photographer Ed Rosenberger, was a model/assistant/intern/gosling for local advertising photographer Michael Schoenfeld, where he learned much of the stuff “they never tell you in school”.

Walt is currently working in the Advertising/Commercial photography field.

Walt’s photography covers a broad range of subjects and styles; from landscapes and portraiture to product and lifestyle. His photographic skills cover a wide array of equipment from traditional 4x5 view cameras to the latest digital technology.

Walt’s greatest ambition in his photography is to produce work that makes the viewer react. He says, “Photography should tell a story even if the the story is just something the viewer creates." this ambition to create a story is how he captures a "slice of life"
